How to choose a turntable

Decide first how much setup and manual operation you want. Fully manual decks require cueing and record return, while automatic models trade some mechanical simplicity for convenience. Direct drive offers fast start and easy speed control; belt drive can isolate the motor effectively. Neither approach guarantees quality by itself.

Check what the advertised package actually includes. A cartridge, phono preamp, dust cover and electronic speed change can materially change total cost. Turntables without a phono stage must connect to a dedicated phono input or external preamp, and moving-coil cartridges need compatible gain and loading.

  • Tonearm: look for accurate bearings, adjustable tracking force and suitable cartridge mounting.
  • Cartridge: confirm replacement stylus availability and upgrade options.
  • Placement: use a rigid, level surface away from loudspeakers and footfall vibration.
  • USB: useful for archiving, but converter resolution varies between models.

Our turntable reviews separate included features from optional upgrades and explain the system each deck needs. For more source and amplifier options, visit the DACs and headphone amps guide.
