Rega Planar 3 Review

Drive system and speed control

A 24 V motor and belt drive work with a light rigid plinth to minimize stored energy. Standard speed changes require moving the belt; the separately sold Neo PSU adds electronic switching and refined motor control. Drive topology alone does not guarantee quality: motor isolation, bearing precision, platter behavior and setup determine audible speed stability and noise. Manual models also require more user involvement than automatic turntables.

Tonearm and cartridge platform

The RB330 is a major part of the value, using precision bearings and a one-piece arm tube. Cartridge packages vary by market, so buyers must verify whether an Nd3, Nd5 or no cartridge is included. Cartridge alignment, tracking force and anti-skate must be set correctly before judging performance. Replaceable styli and standard mounts make future upgrades easier, while factory packages reduce first-time setup.

Phono stage, USB and system connection

Fixed RCA phono leads connect to an MM/MC stage appropriate for the chosen cartridge. There is no built-in preamp, USB, Bluetooth or line output; Planar 3 is designed for a traditional analog system. A turntable without a built-in phono stage must feed a phono input or external preamp. USB is useful for archiving, but its converter resolution and recording workflow should be evaluated separately from analog playback.

Construction, isolation and placement

Acrylic-laminated lightweight plinth uses double bracing between arm and main bearing, while the 12 mm glass platter provides rotational mass. A clear dust cover and improved feet are supplied. A level, stable surface away from loudspeakers reduces acoustic feedback. Dust covers are practical, but some listeners remove or raise them during playback if resonance becomes audible.

Setup and daily ownership

Cueing and record return are manual, and standard speed change is less convenient than on electronically switched rivals. Setup remains straightforward once cartridge alignment and tracking are correct. Records and stylus need cleaning, and the cueing process rewards care. Manual operation is part of the appeal for some buyers and needless friction for others, so convenience should be treated as a real feature rather than an afterthought.

Value and upgrade path

The premium funds the RB330 arm, bearing, motor and plinth platform rather than convenience. Neo PSU and cartridge upgrades can raise total cost considerably, but the base supports long ownership. Budget should include a phono stage, cartridge, mat, isolation and record care when they are not included. The most sensible upgrade is usually careful setup and a fresh stylus before expensive accessories.

Who should buy it?

Buy Planar 3 if you value a high-quality tonearm and minimalist mechanical engineering, and expect to improve cartridge or power supply over time. It suits dedicated hi-fi listeners. Convenience features and USB archiving are outside its purpose.

Alternatives to consider

Pro-Ject Debut EVO 2 includes electronic speed switching and a fitted cartridge in common packages. Rega Planar 2 lowers cost, while Technics SL-100C offers premium direct drive and easier speed control. Rega Planar 6 is the performance step up.

Verdict

Rega Planar 3 remains a strong analog foundation because the RB330, braced plinth and glass platter are designed as one system. Manual speed changes and package-dependent cartridge pricing demand care, but buyers seeking a long-lived, upgradeable turntable receive substance rather than gadgetry.
