The Sony ULT FIELD 3 sits between a pocket speaker and a larger party system. Its detachable shoulder strap makes transport part of the proposition, while the ULT mode puts adjustable bass emphasis at the centre of the design. A useful assessment needs to distinguish those conveniences from assumptions about USB audio, codec support or compatibility with every Sony speaker.
Research-based review. This assessment examines manufacturer documentation and the product’s suitability for different systems. We have not carried out hands-on listening, laboratory measurements or a battery test of this model. Performance figures below are manufacturer claims, not independently measured results.
A carryable speaker rather than a pocket accessory
Sony lists dimensions of approximately 256 by 113 by 79 mm and a weight around 1.2 kg. A woofer and tweeter share the enclosure, and the supplied shoulder strap gives another carrying option beyond holding the body. Check that the strap and attachment points suit your intended use.
Its ULT mode is a bass-oriented processing choice, not proof of a particular extension or distortion level. Try ordinary and enhanced settings in the actual location. A reflective indoor room can emphasise bass differently from open ground, so the most forceful setting is not automatically the most useful one.
USB-C does not mean USB audio
Sony’s specification table explicitly describes the USB-C terminal as DC input/output only. It can serve charging and supported phone-power functions, but should not be purchased on the assumption that a laptop will send audio to it through a USB cable.
The documented Bluetooth music codecs are SBC and AAC, using Bluetooth 5.2. There is no basis for adding LDAC merely because other Sony products offer it. For everyday playback, a stable connection and suitable placement may matter more than a codec badge. For video or gaming, test end-to-end delay rather than assuming that a wireless speaker will behave like a wired monitor.
Calls, pairing and app control
Hands-free support is documented, alongside Stereo Pair and Party Connect. These features solve different tasks: a matching stereo arrangement is different from spreading sound across a compatible group. Check Sony’s current model-compatibility instructions before buying another speaker for a particular connection mode.
The Sound Connect app provides adjustment, including a seven-band custom EQ in the specification table. Begin with moderate changes and use a familiar track. A large low-bass boost can increase demand without overcoming enclosure limits. We have not measured this speaker’s limiting behaviour or compared its call microphones in wind.
Outdoor care and endurance
Sony specifies IP66/IP67 protection and approximately 24 hours of battery life under its stated conditions. Actual endurance depends on volume, settings, content and any power supplied to another device. The longest claim should not be treated as an all-day guarantee at maximum outdoor level.
Keep charging and power-output areas dry and follow Sony’s cleaning instructions after outdoor use. A rugged description does not remove the need to protect a rechargeable device from heat or charging in unsuitable conditions. For value, compare local warranty and the full carrying package, including whether you already own a suitable USB power supply.
What to expect in a real setup
Can I connect a laptop by USB-C for music? Sony lists the USB-C port as DC input/output only. Use the documented Bluetooth route rather than assuming it is a USB audio device.
Does it support LDAC? The official documentation lists SBC and AAC for music playback. Do not transfer the codec list from another Sony model.
Alternatives to consider
JBL Charge 6: Compare a different portable format and pairing ecosystem if carrying style and device charging matter to your choice.
Sony ULT FIELD 7: Consider the much larger Sony option only when greater carrying size is acceptable and the listening task actually calls for it.

Verdict
The ULT FIELD 3 is a practical outdoor candidate for listeners who value its strap, adjustment options and documented calling features. Its power-only USB port is an important boundary. An audition should determine whether its balance and usable volume suit your needs; those qualities cannot be established from specifications alone.
