The Soundcore Boom 2 takes a different approach from a pocket speaker: a larger enclosure, a carry handle and a woofer-plus-tweeter arrangement make it a deliberate item to bring along. This review concerns the documented A3138 model. Check the exact version when shopping, because revised listings and similarly named Boom products can create confusion about connection features.
Research-based review. This assessment examines manufacturer documentation and the product’s suitability for different systems. We have not carried out hands-on listening, laboratory measurements or a battery test of this model. Performance figures below are manufacturer claims, not independently measured results.
A larger format with clear priorities
The A3138 user guide lists a 90 by 120 mm woofer and two 20 mm tweeters. That is a more substantial arrangement than a single pocket-speaker driver, although it does not by itself establish tonal accuracy, stereo separation or measured bass extension.
The enclosure and handle suit carrying from a car to a campsite, garden or workout area. They are less appropriate when every gram and centimetre of luggage matters. Choose the format first: buying a large speaker for occasional maximum volume can be inconvenient if most actual listening happens quietly at a desk.
Read the power claim correctly
Soundcore describes 60 W standard output and up to 80 W using BassUp 2.0 on the relevant product information. The user guide quotes up to 80 W. These figures are not a standardised loudness comparison against another brand, and they do not tell us distortion at a chosen volume.
Bass enhancement also changes the balance and power demand. Begin with a moderate setting in the actual location, then adjust rather than automatically selecting the strongest mode. Outdoors, the absence of room reinforcement can make bass seem lighter; demanding more low-frequency output has real limits in any battery-powered enclosure.
Battery, lights and backup power
The manufacturer advertises up to 24 hours of playback, with duration dependent on volume and content. That should be treated as a maximum-condition claim, particularly when using bass enhancement, lights or device charging. A full-power and full-feature session is a different load from moderate background listening.
The A3138 guide lists USB power input of 5 V / 3 A, a 5 V / 1 A device output and a charging time of approximately 5.5 hours. A suitable charger is therefore part of practical ownership. Sending power to a phone is useful, but reduces the energy left for the speaker.
App adjustment and version checks
The guide describes app EQ, firmware updates, battery information and automatic-power-off settings. These are practical controls for adapting the speaker to a location, especially when it sits on a resonant table or near a wall. Placement should be corrected before making extreme EQ changes.
For the documented A3138 guide, Bluetooth is listed as 5.3. Current shop pages may present revised specifications, so check the precise hardware and manual before purchasing for a particular multi-speaker feature. IPX7 water resistance and the floatable design are useful outdoors, but the waterproof cover must be secured and charging should only occur when the relevant areas are dry.
What to expect in a real setup
Does 80 W mean 24 hours at maximum output? No. Maximum output and maximum runtime are separate specifications. Volume, bass settings, lights and device charging affect power consumption.
Which Bluetooth figure applies here? This assessment uses the A3138 user guide, which lists Bluetooth 5.3. Verify the exact current hardware if a seller advertises a revised version.
Alternatives to consider
Anker Soundcore Boom 2 Plus: The natural larger-family comparison when carrying size and price allow; check which additional capability is useful rather than assuming bigger is always better.
Tribit StormBox Blast 2: A different large-portable option to research for group listening, with size and transport convenience part of the decision.

Verdict
The Boom 2 is most useful when its larger format is an acceptable trade for outdoor flexibility. Match the exact A3138 hardware, bring a suitable charger and set realistic endurance expectations. We have not measured its maximum output or tested its sound against competing portable speakers.
