Stealth Magnet and acoustic performance descriptions are manufacturer claims unless independently measured.
Quick answer: HiFiMAN Edition XS is a large open-back planar magnetic headphone with 18-ohm impedance, 92 dB sensitivity and 405 g weight. The low impedance does not guarantee easy drive, because the source must supply current cleanly. Its large headband and cups make fit a critical purchase check.
Key specifications
- Open-back planar magnetic design
- 18-ohm impedance
- 92 dB sensitivity
- 405 g weight
- 8 Hz–50 kHz stated frequency response
- Stealth Magnet driver structure
- Detachable cable with dual earcup connections
Low impedance is only half the source story
An 18-ohm load asks the source for current, while 92 dB sensitivity is not especially high. A weak dongle may reach moderate volume but have limited headroom. A competent audio interface, desktop amplifier or powerful portable player is a more predictable match.
Check measured output power into low impedances and confirm that the source remains low in distortion. More amplifier power beyond clean headroom does not automatically improve frequency response. Safe listening level matters more than maximum capability.
Planar design and Stealth Magnets
Planar drivers move a thin diaphragm with conductive traces across a magnetic field. HiFiMAN’s Stealth Magnet geometry is intended to reduce acoustic interference around the diaphragm. This is a construction feature, not independent proof of transparency or lower distortion across every frequency.
The 8 Hz–50 kHz range also lacks a stated level tolerance and cannot show tonal balance. Use full independent response, distortion and channel-matching measurements when comparing Edition XS with Sundara or dynamic headphones.
Open-back limitations
The open cups leak music outward and admit room noise. Edition XS belongs in a quiet room and should not be used for commuting, libraries, shared offices or recording near open microphones. Turning up volume to overcome noise creates risk without providing isolation.
The open driver also deserves protection from liquids, dust and impacts. A large planar diaphragm and exposed grille are not designed for workouts or rough travel.
Fit and 405 g weight
Edition XS uses a large frame and oval earcups. At 405 g, it is heavy compared with many dynamic headphones. Large heads may appreciate the space, while smaller heads can experience insufficient clamp or unstable positioning. Fit affects both comfort and acoustic consistency.
An extended trial is essential. Pads, glasses and ear position influence seal and perceived response. The detachable cable is replaceable, and pads are wear items; use parts made for the correct model.
Edition XS versus Sundara
Both are open planar headphones with 92 dB listed sensitivity, but Sundara is 32 ohms and 342 g on the current official page, while Edition XS is 18 ohms and 405 g. Edition XS is physically larger and uses the Stealth Magnet design. Neither specification set decides preference.
Compare fit first, then level-match on the same amplifier. A larger driver housing or lower impedance is not an automatic upgrade. Price differences should be judged against comfort, measurements and the source already owned.
Who should buy it?
Choose Edition XS for quiet-room planar listening if the large fit works and the source handles low impedance cleanly. Skip it for small heads, travel, shared spaces, low weight or microphone work.
Alternatives and verdict
The Sundara is lighter, the Meze 109 Pro is a sensitive dynamic alternative, and the HD 660S2 is a lighter high-impedance open option.
Edition XS provides a large open planar format at a comparatively accessible price, but weight, head fit and current demand can dominate ownership. Verify all three before assuming its specifications make it an automatic step up from Sundara.
